Blood Safety

An information system to secure blood donation

Project description

Several sub-Saharan African countries suffer from a scarcity of safe blood. There are multiple reasons to that, especially in the strategy on recruiting donors, but also in monitoring withdrawn blood bags. The BSIS system, abbreviation for Blood Safety Information System, is an initiative backed up by the South African NGO Jembi. Conceived for countries with limited means, the system allows them to centralise the information on donors and blood needs, and make them available at a higher scale and improve the labelling of the blood bags. The project is funded by international agencies such as USAID.
