Willing to improve the quality and standard of living of the farmers and increase their margin of profit in selling their products, Mark Davies, a British originating from South Africa, founded the Esoko company in Accra (Ghana) in 2004. Esoko provides agricultural markets in Africa with a web and mobile service of information and communication. It is a response to the exponential growth of cellular services throughout the continent. The company provides with advice to farmers (current price, weather forecasts and advice on growth) to help them increasing their yield and profit, as well as solutions to companies (products marketing, monitoring of the activities and supply). The technological platformf itself consists of automated and personalised SMS notifications, purchasing and selling offers, grouped SMS, pools and online surveys by SMS.Besides technology, Esoko helps on strategic planification and forms its clients on the field. The Esoko software is also present in eleven countries among which Kenya, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin, Madagascar, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Not less than 150 000 farmers spread in these countries - listed in the database of Esoko - are using it today. Its development and its system required an investment of more than 3 millions of dollars.
