Project description
Thanks to Shop Soko, a mobile and e-trade platform specializing in jewelery and handicrafts, Gwendolyn Floyd, Ella Peinovich and Catherine Mahugu allow local artisans, especially Kenyan women, to get out of the informal economy, gain access to the global market as formal business operators and generate income to improve their quality of life. These artisans use environmentally friendly raw materials previously certified and labeled by Soko, such as recycled brass and recovered calf's horn and bones, to make jewelry. To circumvent Internet access challenges faced by many artisans in remote villages in Kenya, Soko uses an innovative mobile-to-web enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution that connects independent artisans directly to Shop Soko and global customers. Uploading photos and descriptions of products, updating prices, recording sales, receiving payments ... Everything is done by SMS. Also, the only requirement for creating and administering your Soko online store is to have a mobile phone, even without a connection. All logistic and shipping part across the 35 countries where Soko Shop is available is supported by the startup itself.
